Introduction

Chinese is one of the 6 official languages of the UN and is also included in top 10 most widely spoken languages around the world. Everybody says that if you know Chinese, you can travel all over the world. Although some learners think Chinese is a difficult language, if you study hard, you will find it is very interesting.

There are quite a lot of job opportunities for the one who is expert in Chinese. Nowadays the graduated students of Chinese specialization are offered by many foreign companies and employers to join them. So we would like to encourage Chinese specialization students to master the Chinese language. We warmly welcome you to study Chinese at YUFL. There are a variety of courses such as Ph.D, M.A, B.A, Diploma and CHRD courses opened at YUFL. You can choose and attend the suitable courses for yourself.

Situation

Department of Chinese is situated on the first floor of MC Building.

Courses offered

Chinese Department is established on 23rd, June, 1965, and offered Diploma courses only. Starting from 2000, B.A courses were opened. M.A (Qualifying) courses, M.A courses and Ph.D courses were offered in 2008, 2009 and 2011 respectively. Apart from these courses, CHRD Chinese language evening courses were also offered.

Starting from 2014-2015 Academic year, there are also internship programs for B.A final year students.

In 2016-2017 Academic year there are altogether 500 students studying at Chinese Department of YUFL. 10 of the teaching staff from the department are Ph.D candidates. Moreover, 3 teachers of the first batch have already been awarded Ph.D degree by YUFL.

Strength and qualifications of the teaching staff

The former heads of the Chinese Department are as follow.

(4) Daw Than Than Yi (Lecturer)

(5) Daw Khin Maw Soe (Lecturer)

At present, there are altogether 25 teaching staff including the head of Chinese Department professor Dr. Khin May Cho. The others are one part-time professor, one associate professor, 16 lecturers, 2 assistant lecturer and 4 tutors .15 teachers have been trained under the sponsorship of the Chinese Government. There are 3 Ph.D degree holders and 16 M.A Degree holders. In 2015-2016 Academic year, 5 teachers got the scholarship offered by CSC (China Scholarship Council); 2 for Ph.D course, one for M.A course and 2 for advanced refresher course. Now they are studying at Beijing Language and Culture University.

International relationship

Chinese Department at YUFL has developed relation with other universities in China such as   Beijing Foreign Studies University, Yunnan Minzu University, Qiongzhou University and Guangxi University through memorandum of understanding (MoU) to  cooperate in language teaching, cultural exchange and research.
