A Brief Background History of the Department
Since 16th January 1964, department of German was founded along with the opening of the foreign languages school in Charter bank building on Pansodan road. At first, department of German offered diploma full-time course, diploma part-time course, course for scholars and language proficiency courses. In 1996, the department of German started to offer a bachelor’s degree of arts. Today there are undergraduate and graduate program, diploma part-time, course for scholars and language proficiency classes on weekend and weekdays. From 1964 to 1981 twelve visiting lecturers worked and from 2009 to 2015 department of German hosted two DAAD Lecturers. The former heads of department were U Thet Khin (1972 -1984), U Hla Kyaing (1984-2006), Daw Thang Khan Dim (2006-2010), Daw Pyoan Pyoan Htay (2010-2017). Since 2017 Daw Thang Khan Dim is head of German department. Now 14 academic teaching staffs are working at the department. Most of all teachers form the department attended the trainings, seminars and workshops for teaching German as a Foreign Language in Bangkok, Indonesia and Berlin with the support of DAAD, participated in summer language course at Heidelberg University in Germany and cooperated with Goethe Institute, Myanmar and participated in seminars for German Language Teachers and teaching methodology for German literature, culture and intercultural communication. The department of German signed MoU with the Zepplin University, Germany as the international cooperation and sent a student for one year scholarship according to the student exchange program. The department of German published 21 research papers till June, 2018 and 8 research papers are currently conducting. Over 500 students are now studying German as a foreign language in 2018-2019 academic year. About 670 students are graduated from 1996 to 2018. From 2012 to 2018 there are 24 Master degree holders.
Academic Programmes offered by the German Department
The Department offers the four year bachelor’s degree in German, the four year diploma degree, the one year MA (Qualifying) course and the two year master’s degree in German. It also provides the students of non-German specialization students with Evening and Weekend Courses under the Human Resource Development programme, three-month and six-month German language courses (Basic, Intermediate and Advance Level). And courses for scholars and language proficiency courses have been offered.
Student Population
At present there are altogether nearly 500 students enrolled at the different levels of academic programmes, including 2 students in Second year MA, 2 students in MA (Qualifying) Course, 23 students in Diploma (Part-time), 82 students in Fourth year (BA), 112 students in Third year (BA), 93 students in Second year (BA), 119 students in First year (BA), and 60 students in CHRD evening and weekend classes.
Staff Strength
The German Department has a staff of 14 people, including 2 associate professors, 7 lecturers, 4 assistant lecturers and 1 tutor. All of its staff members hold Master degrees.
Research Progammes
Departmental researches (yearly), Research Seminar/ Paper readings (weekly) are enriched by faculty members, Post-graduate research by MA Thesis students and Under-graduate research projects by Fourth year German Specialization students. The research studies conducted cover a wide spectrum, which includes such areas as developing teaching language
skills, translation studies, cultural and literary studies, and Applied Linguistics field.
Workshops with other organizations
The German Department has cooperated with Goethe Insitut, DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) and German Universities. Most of the teachers from German Department have been invited to attend the summer university in Germany, seminars and workshops for universities’ teachers, in Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia.

Future Programmes
Our Department always considers to produce the quality graduates who are aware of language knowledge and communicative skills and to get a leading role in daily life. Some of the courses will be opened in the near future to expand programs to support and fulfill the needs of the community. It will also be committed in research development of the academic subjects and teaching methods.
