Department History

The Department of Japanese emerged together with the establishment of the Institute of Foreign Languages (IFL) in the year 1964. Initially only the native Japanese were assigned to conduct the classes, until sometime later a few local teachers were appointed. In the early days, the institute was only able to sponsor Full-time diploma and Part-Time diploma courses.

Then at the beginning of the new century undergraduate programs were introduced, whereby the first graduation ceremony of the Yangon University of Foreign Languages was held in 2003.

Our aim of teaching Japanese Language is

1. Through learning Japanese Language; students can contribute to the creation of cooperative society of Japan and Myanmar at the grassroots level while acquiring knowledge of languages, cultures and social customs of both countries and deepening their understanding of multicultural society.

2. Through various class activities, students can participateproactively in 21stcentury society through cooperating and collaborating with others while learning autonomously over lifelong and acquiring abilities to find problems and to solve them.

3. In addition to mastering the competence to realize the success of life in the 21st century society, student can establish identity and develop rich human nature with individuality.

The goal of Department of Japanese is to;
(a) Cultivate Japanese-Speaking Myanmar who shall be responsible for the next generation
(b) To be active locally and abroad in the future. For young people living in a modern international society, it is important to learn different cultures including foreign languages. In addition, they also need to acquire the knowledge and skills that the society needs.

In order to achieve these goals the teaching staff of the Department of Japanese is striving hard, working hand in hand with the collaboration and cooperation and coordination of the native Japanese lectures. Some are volunteers from different organizations in Japan and visiting lecturers assigned by the Japan Foundation, which also include Japanese Partners to assist local teachers in the classrooms, are attached to the department.

Presently, the following Faculty Members of the Japanese Department are now conducting undergraduate classes, diploma classes and weekend/evening classes (CHRD) for certificate.

Up to this date Yangon University of Foreign Languages has conferred Master degrees, Bachelor degrees and presented Diploma to Part Time classes and Certificates to Evening and Weekend classes (CHRD)students specializing in Japanese language,who in their life time shall have confidence, and be competent to carry out their respective duties locally and abroad.
