Department History
The Department of Linguistics at Yangon University of Foreign Languages has been established since 1998. It offers Post-graduate Diploma programme in General Linguistics. The Diploma prograrmme has been recognized as one of the popular ones in the country, especially for those who are interested in language and linguistics that lie beyond teaching, whether or not the learners are language teachers. It also offers general linguistics course as a core-course for BA first year undergraduate students specialized in foreign languages. Both Myanmar and English serve as the languages of instruction. Specific areas of study include phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. The overall orientation toward research and teaching focuses on enabling the researchers to apply the linguistic theories to their research and the learners to apply the knowledge of linguistics to facilitate the teaching and learning any languages.

Specific areas of study include Linguistic Theory (phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics), Experimental Linguistics (especially speech perception and production, and first-language acquisition), Language Change, Discourse & Grammar, Prosody, Sociocultural Linguistics, Language Typology, Sociolinguistics of Professional Organizations, and Media Discourse. Both Myanmar and English serve as the languages of instruction. Except from English specialization, all Master degree first year students specialized in languages are taught linguistics as one of the core-subjects. It also offers general linguistics course as a core-course for BA first year undergraduate students specialized in foreign languages. The overall orientation toward research and teaching focuses on enabling the researchers to apply the linguistic theories to their research and the learners to apply the knowledge of linguistics to facilitate the teaching and learning of any languages.
